General Questions

How is ActivTrak different from other employee monitoring software?

ActivTrak was designed from the ground up with the notion of tracking of the active application title bar. This leads to accurate and easily compiled usage statistics that are collected efficiently with no discernable impact on the workstation performance. It's truly the best way to determine how your employees are using their computer time. Furthermore, ActivTrak uses the security of the Network operating system to control access to user data, both realtime and historical.

Can ActivTrak show screen images in real time?

Yes, from the ActivTrak Viewer you can see snapshots of users’ screens in real time on demand. In addition, there is an auto-refresh feature that can update the snapshots as frequently as once a second.

How does ActivTrak use network security to ensure that the wrong people are not viewing user data?

To receive user data in the ActivTrak Viewer, you must be a member of the Domain Admins or the ActivTrak Observers group in the primary domain of the user's workstation. On Novell networks, supervisor equivalence is required.

Does ActivTrak recognize idle workstations, even if the screensaver is not active?

Yes, ActivTrak senses mouse and keyboard input and determines if a user session is inactive, so that actual application usage time is reported in the log and reflected in the statistics. By default, if a workstation is without user input for two minutes it is considered idle.

Can we detect different tabs opened in the same browser?

Only the tab with the focus, counts towards subpage totals. If an employee has two tabs open, you will see evidence of both in the statistics, since they both had focus at one point. But they will accumulate usage time according to the time that they have the focus.

Does ActivTrak track the URL's for browser applications, or just the text in the title bar?

For all applications, ActivTrak records the title bar text, but for browsers it collects an extra data field containing the full URL. The Log Analysis compiles usage statistics both for applications and for URL's.

Can I use ActivTrak on subnets other than my local subnet?

Yes, you can configure which subnets you would like to view, and can have multiple subnets open at the same time.

Can the ActivTrak viewer be used by multiple administrators at one time?

Yes, any number of administrators can view user activity with the ActivTrak viewer on the same network, at the same time.

What types of alarms can ActivTrak generate?

As an administrator using the ActivTrak Viewer, you can configure notifications to be sent as emails, SMS messages, and/or popup messages to you or the user. In addition to providing notification, the alarm system can be used to capture a series of screenshots or to terminate the user's application.

Is there a limit to the number of records that can be viewed in a workstation log?

There is no set limit. A workstation in heavy use for a month might generate 20 thousand records. The ActivTrak viewer can handle many months of data in one workstation log window. The data can be filtered based on field values or any combination thereof, for easier viewing

If an application is open but not in use, does this qualify as idle?

Only one application is counted at a time. If two or more applications are open, only the one that is active (that has the keyboard focus) is accumulating usage time. When the focus is changed to another application, the new application will accumulate the usage time. When we say the program tracks idle time, we mean that if there are no mouse moves or keystrokes for two minutes, no applications accumulate usage time. Instead the time is included in the total idle time.
